O – Opponents to his wishes for land and money were killed with iron tools.
Z – Zealous was he to gain fame nationally.
E – Education, transportation and industry,
D – During his reign he improved tremendously.
O – On October 1, 1949 Mao declared China as a communist state
N – Noted as an important man in history to this date
G - Gruesome were his actions to the people, he killed at an inhumane rate.
Central focus
Students will create their own poem using Voice Thread. Students will use their research from their China Unit and focus on a hero or Villain.

Students will be able to write their own poem and record it using Voice thread.
Students will focus on a Hero or Villain within their unit on China and create a poem.

Students will be formally assessed on their final voice thread. Students will have a rubric to help them as a guide.

Instructional procedure:
The teacher will begin by introducing them to the idea of writing a poem focusing on a hero or villain within the unit on China. The teacher will go through different types of poems with the students to get their creativity started. The teacher will discuss with the student the difference between a hero and villain and let them give some outside examples of heroes and villains. Then the teacher will model her poem on the smart board using Voice thread. Then students will work in pairs and come up with ideas for their poems. Then the teacher will have the students write their poems using a first draft. Students will turn to their partners to help them with editing before revising for their final draft. When students are ready they will use voice thread to record their own poems.
Differentiation
This activity has a lot of aspect of differentiating. Students work in groups, pairs and individually. Students get to use voice thread a great technology tool to help keep thing engaging. Choice of type of poem to write and character to choose. Gifted students can take on the challenge of writing a poem of a hero and then afterward a villain. Students with special needs will have a teacher’s assistant available.
